November is here, and the Thanksgiving holiday is upon us. While the retail world rushes from Halloween to Christmas, I try to take a moment each year and give thanks for the blessings I have. Here are a few things I’m grateful for this year:

  1. Broad Public Knowledge of Gluten Intolerance: When I was diagnosed many years ago, people had never heard of gluten, let alone gluten intolerance. It was difficult to convince people that wheat, rye, barley and other gluten containing items could physically harm me. I was used to blank stares and lots of confusion. Now when I mention that I’m gluten intolerant, more often than not the person I am talking to shares about their friend/family member/loved one/coworker who is gluten intolerant. Im blessed to be generally understood.
  2. Gluten Free Options: Not so long ago, there weren’t any commercially available gluten free foods. Now I can afford to be picky about taste and texture, and each new generation of gluten free foods seems to be better than the last. I’m blessed to have restaurants, convenience foods, and toiletries to choose from.
  3. Family Support: It takes a different amount of time for each person (and each family) to deal with the reality of gluten intolerance – everything has to change on a fundamental level. I am blessed to have non celiac family members who actually support those of us with celiac and make extra efforts to prepare safe foods in a safe environment for us.
  4. Health: Before my diagnosis I was always sick. I didn’t know what feeling good actually felt like. I am blessed to be substantially healthier than I have ever been.

So what about you? What are you grateful for? I’d love to hear from you! Please place your comments in the comment section below!
